Real Animal

Real Animal

»rank: 920

by: Alejandro Escovedo

0ur opinion: :Alejandro Escovedo's 9th solo album, produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T.Rex, Thin Lizzy), Real Animal is a collective journey through Escovedo's various musical incarnations from punk rock to string quintets and it is as introspective as it is retrospective. This album features a band of frequent collaborators, including David Pulkingham (guitar), Josh Gravelin (bass), Hector Munoz (drums), Susan Voelz (violin), Brian Standefer (cello) and Chuck Prophet (guitar). The 13 original tracks unravel Escovedo's musical autobiography while presenting ...

The Boxing Mirror

The Boxing Mirror

»rank: 30211

by: Alejandro Escovedo

0ur opinion: :Alejandro Agonistes may yet have a happy ending, but you wouldn't guess it from this torrent of surrealism and gothic textures. Escovedo's first album since nearly succumbing to hepatitis C and crushing debt in 2OO3 is the darkest, most mysterious album of his career--a harrowing, poetic soundscape partly the result of producer John Cale's industrial-noir sensibilities, but also Escovedo's own avant-garde punk roots. The difficult trilogy which opens the album moves from arid Arizona (a wasteland where the soul ...

Thirteen Years (Bonus CD)

by: Alejandro Escovedo

0ur opinion: :More often than not, strings have often served as a wet blanket in rock & roll, smothering the rough edges and dampening the enthusiasm. There have been exceptions, though, when a small string section has been used sympathetically on rock & roll songs, sprucing up the rhythms and sharpening the tensions. Perhaps the best examples are the Drifters' 'There Goes My Baby,' the Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby,' Van Morrison's 'Cypress Avenue,' Lou Reed's 'Street Hassle,' and Chic's 'Good Times.' Alejandro ...

0ur opinion: :Not exactly Alejandro Escovedo's latest album, this is a partial documentation of a project he's been involved with for the past three years, an exploration of the dynamics of Mexican-American family life in words, music, and pictures. As a stage work, By the Hand of the Father has been performed all over North America to great acclaim, and from the evidence here, a lot of that has to be due to the music, some of which Escovedo fans will ...

Bourbonitis Blues

0ur opinion: :Bourbonitis Blues was recorded straight up, no chaser, (in Chicago, Austin, and Chapel Hill) in down home style -- this is Alejandro and his 'classical glam' 0rchestra at their finest: off the cuff, loose and tight, and reflective of their incredible live shows. The covers range from the achingly languid 'Pale Blue Eyes', featuring Kelly Hogan (ex-Jody Grind, ex-Rock*A*Teens) on vocals, to the chugging cover of Jimmie Rodgers' 'California Blues', with Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers, Pine Valley ...

More Miles Than Money: Live 1994-96

»rank: 46118

by: Alejandro Escovedo

0ur opinion: essential recording:More Miles Than Money: Live 1994-96 is the most compelling solo release yet from this Austin roots rock legend, an alumnus of Rank & File, True Believers, and Buick MacKane. 0n these live recordings, Alejandro Escovedo broods--usually quietly--in front of solemn picking and a weary cello or violin, as is the case during a beautiful version of his best song, 'Pissed 0ff 2 A.M.' A couple of times, though, he shows he can still rock out (a ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
