Since coming out in 1977, this CD had only been released for six months in 1991. Chicago

by: Various Artists

0ur opinion: :The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making, but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actually started her career on the British boards (she was in The Pajama Game and ...

The Pirates of Penzance

The Pirates of Penzance

»rank: 4647

from: Elektra / Wea

0ur opinion: :Producer Joseph Papp's Broadway spin on Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance cannily employs pop firepower in its casting, adding an inviting Yankee accent to roles normally associated with (and sometimes embalmed in) plummy English locution. Erstwhile country-rocker Linda Ronstadt, who by this point had already proven she could tackle pre-rock pop standards, stretches successfully as its heroine. Rex Smith, then dismissed as a pop-rock heartthrob, proves he could be a 'legitimate' musical leading man, a niche he's since ...

0ur opinion: :Much is made of his older brother Brian's tortured genius, but Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson had his own deeply artistic statement to make--one he made with moody, heartrending beauty and fathomless, soulful introspection on his 1977 masterpiece, Pacific 0cean Blue. Besides being the first solo album by a member of the Beach Boys, Pacific 0cean Blue is a lost classic of '7Os West Coast rock, a richly orchestrated opus that swaths the singer-songwriter's delicate and profoundly personal observations ...

War of the Worlds

by: John Williams

0ur opinion: :John Williams continues his longtime collaboration with Steven Spielberg in this adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel of the same name (previously filmed in 1953). Considering that the movie depicts a gigantic Martian invasion, you'd think Williams would have fully gone into his familiar bombastic mode, but he's refrained from doing so. While the composer makes full use of the outsize orchestra at his disposal, he prefers juxtaposing layers and building atmosphere rather than hitting you over the head with ...

Charlie Byrd - For Louis (a tribute to Louis Armstrong)

»rank: 133781

from: Concord Records

0ur opinion: :lt's a sad footnote to For Louis that before it was even released, Charlie Byrd passed away. Byrd's death in December 1999 ended an astonishing career, one that hit incredible highs with Stan Getz on Jazz Samba (not to mention the Woody Herman tours, the various Brazilian awards, etc.). But Byrd always elected a fairly low-key place in jazz, fingerpicking a nylon-string guitar rather than a more conventional electric instrument. He interjected Brazilian motifs and rhythmic structures all over the ...

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
