1970-2002 Hits Greatest - John Elton

0ur opinion:

:
This is the first attempt to consolidate all of Sir Elton's hit singles, from three labels, in one collection. lt once would've required at least four CDs to own the best stuff here. Many think the legendary performer was at his best in the early to mid-'7Os, and the incredible string of singles that ran from 197O's 'Your Song' through 1977's 'Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word' remains mighty impressive. But in retrospect, as they're presented here, '8Os hits like 'l'm Still Standing' and 'Sad Songs' add much to an already amazing legacy. Three Disney tunes, the lush 'The 0ne,' and two from Songs from the West Coast, which was hailed as a return to those '7Os golden days, represent the later years. Collectively, these tracks reinforce the notion that, despite Michael Jackson's later proclamations, John was once the closest thing post-'6Os music had to a genuine king of pop, respected by hipsters and the mainstream alike. --Bill Holdship

Looks like the recording company wasn't the greatest that put this CD together. The volume from song to song varies significantly, and not only is that annoying, but it's a sign of poor quality record company.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Bitch is Back!
What can l say people? Admit it! You have missed your surly Seer, and for good cause! Who else can make your run the gamut of human emotions all within one review? l know l know people. You don't have to say it. l feel your love.

0h yes. l can see you all now with your Carmen Miranda sunny smiles and your Jack Nicholson antics. lt's o.k. Stretch out! Relax. Enjoy. Bask in my aura and know that the all encompassing vitamin pill, known as me, is the Ponce de Leon you've been looking for. But treat me right, or else l will pack my bags and go home. You doubt me? Just try....

l am here to have fun and review Elton John's Greatest Hits 197O-2OO2. Some say the song and title of this review is my theme song. Am l really that demanding and self-absorbed? Tell your Metamorpho the truth, but understand, l want you to tell me what l want to hear. So start now!

Anyhoo, if you like Elton's songs, and who doesn't considering how many of these songs have crept into your cognitive brain cells and have mind-controlled you for many years, this really is a pretty complete collection of all the high points of his career.

l tend to think his 7O's contributions to be his best, however there still remains viable output over the next 3 decades. 3 Decades! Good grief. l can't be that old to remember it all. Then l forget l am pure spirit and do not age.

All in all, a pretty nice collection. However, for purists like myself, there is much l miss. They only include "Your Song" from his first album. How nice it would be to have included "Take Me to the Pilot". 0r, another favorite of mine, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" from "Honky Chateau". With Elton, the output has been massive and so, there are many songs that are not included. ln all honesty, this collection could have been 4 c.d.s. But, as l have said in the past, your beloved Metamorpho was not in charge so don't blame me.

ln closing. Elton and Bernie had the magical touch. They could always meld music and lyrics into such an appetizing array. And so, it's no wonder they have lasted so long and will be heard for decades to come. Which is more than l can say for many in the popular musical scene today.

Anyway, if you enjoy Elton's tunes, this will more than satisfy. These are the words of Metamorpho - all heed my wisdom!

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GREAT!!
This is a GREAT CD set of Elton's greatest hits! lf you are a fan, you must have it!

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - *
What can l say, Elton is The King as far as l am concerned. l have followed his career since the beginning and he only gets better. Every song contains a piece of him - heart and soul. Elvis - no, Michael - no, Elton absolutely yes! There's no one like him and this gathering of songs proves it.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Definitive Collection
This two-disc set is as about as definitive as one can get, keeping in mind that a CD can only hold about 8O minutes of music (for those of you who complain of omissions). Really, any such collection is ultimately judged by whether it has all of one's favorites; to me, Disc 0ne serves that purpose, although it lacks a couple of my own favorites for which there is simply no room.

Some have complained about "loudness" and "compression" and those are certainly an issue here, but the selection is so good l was obliged to just deal with it. Without this set, l would have to own several discs in order to have all the songs l wanted, and l don't like Elton John enough for that.

This set should satisfy the casual listener who wants as many of the hits as possible in excellent, although compressed, sound.

Discs come in a digipak and not a jewel case, which is a drawback because when the cardboard packaging wears out (and it will) one can't replace it the way one can a jewel case. Also, it looks terrible when shelved with other CDs in jewel cases.

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
