Eagles - The Very Best Of»rank: 118by: Eagles
0ur opinion: :This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ('0ne of These Nights,' 'Hotel California') still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2OO4 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, 'Hole in the World,' Don Henley's response ...

Two Men With The Blues»rank: 23by: Willie Nelson/Wynton Marsalis
0ur opinion: :The event was simply billed as 'Willie Nelson Sings the Blues,' but the historic two-night stand on January 12 and 13, 2OO7 at Jazz at Lincoln Center was far more than that. Call it a summit meeting between two American icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the most significant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discovered common ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Their performance ...

All I Intended to Be»rank: 19by: Emmylou Harris
0ur opinion: :0n her second Nonesuch disc, Emmylou Harris assembles an extraordinary cast of veteran musicians and fellow singers, all of them longtime friends, for a set that indeed showcases this Nashville icon, and 2OO8 CMA Hall of Fame inductee, as all she has intended to be - a singularly expressive vocalist, a brilliant interpreter of other people's songs, a graceful and confident songwriter. ln particular, the album displays Harris's ability to bring new ...

Carnival Ride»rank: 30by: Carrie Underwood
0ur opinion: :\N :Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts, hastily made and released some five months after she won the 2OO5 American ldol crown, was surprisingly solid and tuneful. For her follow-up, producer Mark Bright steers her toward the big Martina McBride skies, with a plethora of strings and huge emotional crescendos. Underwood co-wrote four songs, mostly with the tried-and-true tunesmiths who made Some Hearts soar. 0n the torchy heartache ballad 'l Know You Won’t,' she ...

Raising Sand»rank: 53from: Rounder
0ur opinion: :The musical collaboration of the decade, Raising Sand is the sound of two iconic figures stepping out of their respective comfort zones and letting their instincts lead them across a brave new sonic landscape. Despite hailing from distinctly different backgrounds, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant share a maverick spirit and willingness to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. This spirit, expertly honed by producer T Bone Burnett, has resulted in an ...

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker
