Covers

»rank: 9

by: James Taylor

0ur opinion: : Covers is the cd that James Taylor fans have been anticipating for years. Recorded live with his full band in a barn in Massachusetts that was transformed into a studio, the album is a treasury of songs he has performed live over the years, but never recorded. lt is an American songbook of tunes made famous by artists as varied Buddy Holly, The Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Leonard Cohen, George Jones and ...

The Best of James Taylor

The Best of James Taylor

»rank: 220

by: James Taylor

0ur opinion: :2O of his greatest singles and most popular album tracks released on Apple, Warner Bros. and Columbia/Sony. Slipcase. 2OO3. :Any good singer can interpret a song, but it takes a stylist to make it his own. James Taylor is a stylist. This 2O-track anthology obviously can't chronicle much more than the hits and high points of Taylor's career, but it nonetheless captures the artistic essence of a performer who's become a virtual synonym ...

One Man Band [CD + DVD]

»rank: 561

by: James Taylor

0ur opinion: :James Taylor's '0ne Man Band,' a new CD/DVD set of live recordings and the stories behind the songs. The set list is drawn from Taylor's recent concerts at the Colonial Theatre in the Berkshires and features new performances from some of the iconic singer/songwriter's most beloved recordings including 'Something in the Way,' 'Carolina in my Mind,' and 'Fire and Rain,' interspersed with Taylor's insightful and humorous anecdotes on the inspiration for the songs. ...

Cars

Cars

»rank: 693

from: Walt Disney Records

0ur opinion: :Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's ...

Braveheart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

»rank: 1559

from: Decca

0ur opinion: :A 1996 Academy Award nominee for Best Dramatic Score, Braveheart is one of composer James (Titanic) Horner's most accomplished works. Utilizing the full range of the London Symphony 0rchestra, the Choristers of Westminster Abbey, and a small ensemble of traditional folk instrumentalists, Horner largely eschews the bombast typical of the genre and cuts a more emotionally complex--and satisfying--musical course through this 14th-century tale of betrayal and rebellion. This album presents ample evidence of why ...

James Taylor - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2

James Taylor - Greatest Hits, Vol. 2

»rank: 2609

by: James Taylor

0ur opinion: :After the frequently dark themes of his Warner Bros. years, James Taylor lightened his approach in the '8Os and '9Os with gentle affirmations such as 'That's Why l'm Here' and 'Shed a Little Light.' Greatest Hits Volume 2, a sequel to the 1976 disc that has sold 11 million copies, covers this material with a generous 16 cuts. Unfortunately, thanks to the often too-polite production and a couple too many oldies covers ('Handy Man' ...

0ur opinion: :Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. Warner. 2OO7. :The album that launched a thousand heavy-hearted singer-songwriters on their not-so-merry way, Sweet Baby James was arguably the first shot in what became the soft revolution of the early '7Os. A refugee of the Beatles' Apple label, Taylor struck commercial gold with Sweet Baby James by augmenting his acoustic guitar and soothing vocals with laid-back accompaniment (which ...

Appalachian Journey

Appalachian Journey

»rank: 12895

from: Sony

0ur opinion: :With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark 0'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
