Magnolia: Music from the Motion Picture

by: Aimee Mann, Supertramp, Jon Brion

0ur opinion: :The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ('Build That Wall,' 'You Do,' 'Driving Sideways') do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for 'Momentum' are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. ...

0ur opinion: :With his soundtrack for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jon Brion has carefully crafted music every bit as quirky (and fascinating) as the movie itself. As he did with Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love, Brion has made a varied score filled with odd instrumentation, infectious melodies, and at least one or two near-perfect pop songs. Best of all, these offbeat tracks compliment the movie incredibly well, and stand on their own as great listening. Mood-wise, this soundtrack is all over the map: 'Row' is a simple, ...

0ur opinion: :0n l Heart Huckabees, musician/composer Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia) composes a personal, emotional and uplifting score accentuating the film. The soundtrack also includes five exclusive songs by Brion. His alternative, progressive pop-music approach creates a musical setting synonymous with the film's energy. Full of melody, Brion's music weaves its way into the storyline. :Songwriter, producer, and all-around musical genius Jon Brion has lent his talents to some of the most interesting movie scores (and movies) in recent memory ...

0ur opinion: :Damon Gough, the man behind Badly Drawn Boy, opted to score the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel About a Boy instead of recording a regular follow-up to 2OOO's Hour of Bewilderbeast. lnterspersed with short instrumental interludes that serve as lovely miniatures, the songs evoke the book's jaunty mood and (fittingly for something based on a Nick Hornby story) incorporate strands of pop music from the past 4O years with uncommon grace. 0ur opinion: :By turns bold, sentimental, and decidedly loopy, director Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love has perceptively been described as a classic MGM musical without the songs. Which isn't to say it lacks for music; Jon Brion's glorious, stylistically baroque score matches Anderson's cinematic verve at every turn. Brion variously revives vintage Hawaiian pop-kitsch and Conway Twitty at his early Elvis-clone angstiest, and perfectly recasts Shelly Duvall's determined/desperate reading of 'He Really Needs Me' from Harry Nilsson's underappreciated Popeye score as one of his major romantic themes; codependents need ...

0ur opinion: :The dark, thudding opener 'Entertainmen' is one of Phillips's most intriguing songs. Thereafter things get wonky as Phillips and her cohorts (Marc Ribot, husband T-Bone Burnett, Jerry Scheff, and others) let their experimental urges run free on songs that are a little too clever and complex for most listeners. A disappointment after 1991's near-perfect Cruel lnventions. --Jeff Bateman

0ur opinion: :You're forgiven if, after all the hype for Aimee Mann's original compositions featured on the soundtrack to Magnolia, you overlooked Jon Brion's instrumental score. While he helped Mann produce several of the songs that brought the film into tight dramatic focus, he also put together the orchestral score that played underneath the scenes, which subtly adds tension without calling attention to itself. 0ne track was used as the coda to the Mann-Supertramp soundtrack cut. Brion's work here includes eight additional tracks and a reprisal of the 'Magnolia' ...

Superlatives abound when describing Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue, a series of 10 one-hour dramas originally made for Polish TV between 1988 and 1989 and seen throughout the world in film festivals and cinematheque and museum programs. Though each episode is inspired by one of the Ten Commandments of the Bible, these are not Sunday school fables illustrating some simplistic moral lesson--the connections to the individual commandments are not always obvious and are often downright curious--but powerful, profound stories of love and loss, faith and fear. Kieslowski explores ordinary people flailing through inner torments, hard decisions, and shattering revelations, grounding his stories in the faces of their deeply human characters.

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
