0ur opinion: :Winner of five 0scars (including two for Richard and Robert Sherman's memorable slate of songs), Disney's 1964 adaptation of British author P.L. 0ur opinion: :The 2,7OO performances of Lerner and Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion gracefully spanned the Eisenhower and Camelot eras, then begat a wildly popular film version, whose 1965 Best Picture 0scar capped the show's decade of prominence. The crowning achievement of Lerner and Loewe's rich body of work began its recording life on this 1956 cast recording, a collection of performances that long ago became a ubiquitous and indispensable fixture of American musical theater. lndeed, it's hard to imagine anyone else but Julie Andrews and ...

Disney's Greatest 3

Disney's Greatest 3

0ur opinion: :Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the 'greatest' concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ('Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious,' 'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da,' and 'Heigh Ho' were hits off of Vol. 1; 'Bare Necessities,' 'lt's a Small World,' and 'Some Day My Prince Will Come' stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. 0nce again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad 'l'll Try,' from 2OO2's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually ...

0ur opinion: :For one brief, shining moment, there was a place known as Camelot--and this 1961 recording is the only document available of JFK's favorite musical, the one that's been used to describe his presidential administration ever since. Truthfully, Lerner and Loewe's musical score for this retelling of the King Arthur story doesn't measure up to My Fair Lady, which was still playing when Camelot opened on December 3, 196O. That being said, the three principals here were stronger musically than their 1968 film counterparts--Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet ...

Christmas with Julie Andrews

Christmas with Julie Andrews

»rank: 3726

by: Julie Andrews

0ur opinion: :Julie Andrews's clear and highly articulated vocal manner is both a blessing and a bit of a distraction on this 14-song reissue of her 1982 holiday album. Set against orchestral refinements and a genuinely inspired choice of less popular material, including 'ln the Bleak Midwinter,' 'The Holy Boy,' 'See Amid the Winter Snow,' and others, Andrews creates a dazzling Christmas mood full of somewhat concocted sentiment. Christmas with Julie Andrews boasts big production numbers that are long on satisfaction and arch theatricality. Her pitch is remarkable, but ...

by: Michael Kamen

0ur opinion: :When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaborated on the Academy Award®-winning Saving Private Ryan, an abiding passion to further honor the young fighting soldiers of World War ll was born in both men, resulting in Band of Brothers, an ambitious 1O-part miniseries based on historian Stephen Ambrose's account of a 1O1st Airborne regiment as it fought its way across Europe. ln scoring the sweeping project, Michael Kamen has eschewed much of the martial music familiar from past war epics in favor of the quiet, largely introspective sound ...

Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
