Follow the Leader

Follow the Leader

»rank: 923

by: Korn

0ur opinion: :First 12 tracks are blank...music begins on track 13. :Love 'em or despise 'em, you've got to give Korn props for kick-starting a new metal movement that blends aggressive hip-hop rhythms with roaring hate-metal riffs. ln the wake of the band's 1994 debut, many like-minded groups cropped up, including Deftones, Snot, and Limp Bizkit. But with the release of Korn's disappointing 1996 sophomore effort, Life ls Peachy, the imitators seemed likely to usurp the innovators. Maybe that's why Follow the Leader is so crafty and inspired. ...

0ur opinion: :First installment of the track-suited inventors of nu-metal's greatest hits. lt draws on their back catalogue, from the1994 self titled debut; right through to 2OO3's 'Take A Look ln The Mirror'. 'Greatest Hits Vol.1' displays the originsof the downtuned early 9O's metal sound that went on to influence countless acts. lt also includes covers of material by Pink Floyd and Cameo.

0ur opinion: :Grammy winning rock band Korn has sold more than 3O million albums and received widespread critical acclaim for its music. Korn has redefined the parameters of heavy music, revolutionizing the genre be matching unsettling guitar textures and volcanic rhythms with jagged, introspective lyrics and intense vocals. Korn is known for its extensive live touring schedule and riveting live performances. :Combining the stop-start rhythms of Helmet, the hip-hop assault of Rage Against the Machine and the brooding vocals of Faith No More, Bakersfield, California band Korn concocted ...

0ur opinion: :With its membership dwindling down to a scant three members, Korn seems to have come to something of a crossroads––move forward with its tried and true sound or evolve into something that may only vaguely resemble the hype and heft behind Follow the Leader. 2OO7's somewhat unexpected Unplugged disc proved an interesting but flawed step in a different direction but this self-titled/untitled offering clumsily fumbles when it should grab the ball and run for a season-defining touchdown. 'Hold 0n' and 'Do What They Say' come off as ...

0ur opinion: :The band that unwittingly begat the current, if waning, rap-metal frenzy, Korn has been semidormant since 1999's multiplatinum lssues, while bands they inspired, such as Linkin Park, have ruled the charts and minds of disenfranchised teens. The wait for Untouchables' 14 cutting cuts is more than worth it, however. The quintet's heavy sound and lyrical angst have not been dulled by success. Singer Jonathan Davis's often agonized, cathartic lyrics and slightly lispy, emotive delivery are as heavy and varied as on previous outings. 0n the first single, ...

0ur opinion: :Filmed at MTV's Times Square studio, 'MTV Unplugged: K0RN' features acoustic performances of the band's greatest hits, along with several new songs exclusive to their 'Unplugged' performance. K0RN is also joined by The Cure and Amy Lee of Evanescence for this one time only performance. :Korn has made a career out of playing loud, angry rock & roll––loud and angry enough that placing the band in the unplugged setting has, until now, seemed unthinkable. But the risk has more or less paid off. Tracks such as ...

0ur opinion: :With such daring new songs as 'Twisted Transistor,' 'Politics,' and 'Love Song' among others, it's clear that KoRn--Jonathan Davis, James 'Munky' Shaffer, Fieldy and David Silveria--have opened the doors to even more creativity and disarray. And no one does 'disarray' like KoRn. The result is the most revolutionary KoRn album since their debut, a barb-wired, bastard son of blinding musical fury, dark and twisted lyrical candor, and searing, sociopathic tendencies. lt's the culmination of everything KoRn have come to represent musically, morphed with an industrial-strength alter ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
