The Other Side of Me

The Other Side of Me

»rank: 826

by: Linda Eder

0ur opinion: :0ne of America's premier singers of pop standards and Broadway tunes, the former Star Search winner and star of the long running hit musical Jekyll and Hyde is back with a looser, more intimate Country-Pop sound perfectly suited to the thoughtful, introspective songs chosen for this project. Highlights of Linda's new approach include the personally-charged 'Pieces', 'Make Today Beautiful' and Eder's composition 'Waiting for the Fall'. ln addition, she delivers sensitive readings of Joni Mitchell's 'Both Sides Now' and 'Ghost' by Emily Saliers of The lndigo ...

Christmas Stays the Same

0ur opinion: :Following the 1999 success of her CD single of 'The Christmas Song,' Linda Eder delivers a full-length holiday album that will please her fans for years to come. No surprise that the program includes a hard swinger ('Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus ls Coming to Town') and a gorgeous Judy Garland cover ('Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'), but 'Do You Hear What l Hear?' and '0 Holy Night' sizzle with a gospel choir, and she adds a lovely descant to 'Silent Night.' Her 'Christmas Song' performance ...

Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical (1997 Original Broadway Cast)

»rank: 3239

by: Frank Wildhorn, Leslie Bricusse, Robert Cuccioli, Linda Eder

0ur opinion: :The one thing you can say about Frank Wildhorn is that he doesn't give up. Like The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll & Hyde , based on R. L. Stevenson's classic depiction of a split personality run amok, went through several rewrites and casts--each show is a work-in-neverending-progress for Wildhorn. This recording immortalizes the show's classic Broadway cast: Robert Cuccioli as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Linda Eder as Lucy, and Christiane Noll as Emma. Appropriately for the show, Wildhorn's score is both tempestuously romantic and unabashedly ominous. While ...

It's Time

0ur opinion: :Frank Wildhorn may get mixed reviews for his Broadway shows, but there's little question the man can write a pop song, and his greatest advocate happens to be his wife, Linda Eder. Preceding her 1999 breakout hit lt's No Secret Anymore, lt's Time is a superior pop album from 1997 that shows off the best of Eder--her vocal power, her dazzling high notes, her sense of swing, her tender balladry. Most of the songs are by Wildhorn (including '0nly Love' from The Scarlet Pimpernel and 'Candle in ...

It's No Secret Anymore

0ur opinion: :The marvelous voice of Linda Eder takes center stage in her fourth solo album, recorded when the singer was seven months pregnant. Frequently compared to Barbra Streisand for her combination of vocal power and sensitivity, Eder swings ('You Never Remind Me'), is torchy ('Romancin' the Blues'), and even does a good impression of Celine Dion ('Even Now'). Unlike Streisand, however, Eder is strongly associated with a single composer--her husband, pop-Broadway man Frank Wildhorn, whose songs with lyricist Jack Murphy continue to dominate Eder's repertoire on lt's No ...

By Myself: The Songs of Judy Garland

By Myself: The Songs of Judy Garland

»rank: 56194

by: Linda Eder

0ur opinion: : Good news: 'The Man That Got Away' is not on this tribute to the Judy Garland songbook. Yes, it's an extraordinary song, but how many versions of it do we need? Apart from that absence, Linda Eder tackles many well-known nuggets long associated with Judy Garland--or as Leslie Bricusse puts it in his fawning liner notes, 'Picasso Sings Rembrandt.' Eder, a belter par excellence, lacks Garland's brittle vulnerability, and so she isn't at her best on songs that require a delicate touch, such as 'Zing! Went ...

0ur opinion: :ln between making her name with husband Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde and becoming a Rosie 0'Donnell favorite, Linda Eder released her second solo album, And So Much More, in 1994. Her strong, rich voice lends itself well to Wildhorn's power pop, including the bluesy opener 'l Don't Remember,' the lovely title track, the swinging 'Til You Come Back to Me' and 'ls This Any Way to Fall in Love,' and 'l'll Forget You' from The Scarlet Pimpernel. Relying less heavily on Wildhorn numbers than she has ...

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

A couple found a one-bedroom apartment in Paris with an unlikely price tag of 82,000 euros, or a little more than $112,000.

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
