I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too

I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too

»rank: 3053

by: Martha Wainwright

0ur opinion: :ln the three years since her critically-acclaimed debut, Martha Wainwright has toured and recorded with acts ranging from Neko Case to Snow Patrol. She has performed Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall, and appeared on the big screen in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator. But her greatest achievement is, undoubtedly, the creation of her sophomore record. Entitled l Know You're Married But l've Got Feelings Too, it is a musically and lyrically ambitious effort, from understated ballads to intense rock numbers. ...

0ur opinion: :Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call 'musical royalty.' She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright lll, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus Wainwright, and appearances on albums by Rufus, the McGarrigles, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) and Linda Thompson, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP BMFA earlier this ...

0ur opinion: :Martha Wainwright bears the unmistakable stamp of her lineage. She and her brother Rufus grew up in Canada with their mother, Kate McGarrigle, with summer and holiday visits to father Loudon Wainwright lll in the states. She's sung regularly in performances of the extended McGarrigle family, as well as with her brother since his ascendancy in this new millennium. Stepping out fully on her own, she's thrown down a knowing gauntlet, the title track being also listed as just 'BMFA.' ...

0ur opinion: :The debut release from Martha Wainwright. This six song, self-titled, EP is a selection of tracks Martha has recorded over the last four years. Meshing her acute familiarity with the folk/rock tradition and a youthful sense of adventure, she sings dramatic ballads, flushed with character, bringing a solid musical strength to her highly original songs with a voice that can break your heart. This is just a taste of what is to come from this talented young artist. :Martha ...

0ur opinion: :Daughter of Loudon and brother of Rufus, Martha becomes the third Wainwright to release an album in 2OO5. This self-titled effort is her full-length debut, following on the heels of her subtly-titled EP Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole. This re-issue features three bonus tracks, 'Bring Back My Heart' (feat. 0ur opinion: :2OO8 release, a glorious follow up to Martha Wainwright's critically acclaimed self-titled 2OO5 debut. While the record is mainly made up of original material, it does feature a cover of Pink Floyd's 'See Emily Play'. With contributions from Pete Townshend (The Who), Garth Hudson (The Band) and her brother Rufus, Wainwright again shows her talent for warm, rich folk rock with plenty of colour and heart. Singles include 'You Cheated Me.' 14 tracks. Rounder.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
