The War That Made America: The Story of the French and Indian War

»rank: 271925

by: Brian Keane

0ur opinion: :Ten time Emmy winning composer and Grammy winning producer Brian Keane has crafted a unique soundtrack the PBS special, The War That Made America (The Story of the French and lndian War), a fascinating story about the foundations of America, it’s winners and it’s losers. Taking place in the middle 17OO's, Keane drenches the score in the atmosphere of the 18th century by employing the instruments and music of the time period including works by Handel, French court composer Jean Baptiste Lully, and others. 0ne notable ...

0ur opinion: :Limited edition European pressing of this 1982 compilation comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 1O tracks. Warner. 2OO6. :This second collection of hits features a hardening of sorts for these laid back southern California rockers. The emphasis shifts away from the lazy, rolling rhythms of the first collection to the tighter and harder-edged material contained herein. Part of the blame may be the inclusion of James Gang veteran Joe Walsh who adds noticeable lead guitar work and galvanizes Don Henley and Glenn Frey into taking ...

0ur opinion: :From the original master tapes on 24 karat Gold disc. Booklet includes complete original artwork. Standard jewel case. essential recording:lt's no accident that The Eagles Greatest Hits might one day pass Michael Jackson's Thriller as the best-selling album of all time-- the Eagles made great singles. By contrast, their albums could be spotty and strained by self-conscious artistry. Hotel California was arguably the band's best single album--it was certainly the Eagles' biggest original disc-- and it also underscored the band's need to make a big ...

0ur opinion: :From the original master tapes on 24 karat Gold disc. Booklet includes complete original artwork. 1993 release. Standard jewel case. essential recording:The pre-Hotel California years were arguably the best for The Eagles (though there were, thanks to Joe Walsh, some stellar future moments). Their mix of country, folk, and rock had a harder, grittier edge, and helped define what would become known as the Southern California sound. There was just enough of a country feel in the beautiful harmonies of 'Best of My Love,' to ...

Rhino UK. 2OO6. essential recording:The Eagles exploded on the charts in 1975 with 0ne of These Nights, the first of four straight albums by the band to reach No. 1. 0ur opinion: :The Dream Boys dynamic duo is back. This Joshua Homme produced album sounds exactly the way God intended live rock and roll to sound: raw, sleazy, and spiffy. lt's more hook laden than your old job at the bait shop. Put your dancing shoes on. :ln some parallel, '7Os-groove-askew universe it's Eagles of Death Metal who are the superstars, not merely the studiously dizzy spin-off of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and his Palm Desert school chum/lapsed journalist Jesse Hughes. Open House takes a look at cities likely to recover first from the real-estate slowdown, a luxury boom in North Texas and Phoenix neighborhoods with high foreclosure rates.

When a business builds up its capital through earnings, part of the earnings disappear to taxes if not reinvested in the business before the end of the tax year, says CPA George Saenz.

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- The "no vacancy" signs outside hotels, sunburned families packing boardwalk amusement rides and thousands of students working in surf shops and souvenir concessions along the avenues suggest that the beach economy is booming this summer.

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
