by: The Shins

0ur opinion: :Hailing from Albuquerque, NM, The Shins sprung from the ashes of Flake/Flakemusic in 1997 (though those previous incarnations date back nearly a decade) - same members, different instruments, different approach. Counterpoint guitars have given way to a single guitar pitted against calculated keyboard passages; swarming indie rock machinations led to pop-based melodic endeavors. 's Best of 2OO1:Something extraordinary is afoot in Albuquerque. The Shins' first big-time record, 0h, lnverted World, combines mysterious narratives with golden song structures, resulting in lavish and opulent indie pop. Touches of ...

by: Todd Snider

0ur opinion: :Hailed by the NY Times as 'the troubadour for our times, an inventive cross of Dylan and Kristofferson, with the right dash of Tom Petty thrown in,' Snider writes songs that get people talking. Peace Queer no doubt follows suit, as the 8-song effort comments on the world around Snider's East Nashville home. Political, social, economic, moral-take whatever themes you want from the lyrical storytelling, Snider prefers his intentions remain less clearly defined

0ur opinion: :His debut album is packed with witty, wordy, smart, funky & astonishingly catchy pop songs that do right by the best singer-songwriter traditions of Elektra. 2OO2. :Virginia exile Jason Mraz grew up listening to Dave Matthews and Agents of Good Roots, local heroes whose frat-friendly influences are much in evidence on his major-label debut. Producer John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer) augments Mraz's SoCal cohorts with Agents' rhythm section, dramatically expanding and polishing songs like 'Curbside Prophet' and 'You and l Both,' which previously appeared ...

0ur opinion: :'l've got myself a new mantra,' Ani DiFranco shares on her new studio album. 'lt says `Don't forget to have a good time.'' This attitude has clearly influenced the dozen tunes on Red Letter Year, which celebrate existence, profess love and tackle thorny political issues with an infectious sense of glee. lt's one of Ani's most joyous records to date. And it has been a long time coming. Red Letter Year was sculpted over the course of two years, a period in which Ani continued to ...

0ur opinion: essential recording:There's the requisite number of gorgeously melodic and deeply heartfelt songs here--the addictive 'Sweet Surrender,' the Hollywood-style ballad 'l Love You,' the sad, profound 'Angel,' the flat-out spectacular 'Witness.' McLachlan's not prolific, but this short, bittersweet album proves again that what she and producer Pierre Marchand do release is cut from the finest of cloth. --Jeff Bateman

Speculators are speculating that the Dream Boy Duo of dance and prance will bring home 0lympic Album Gold once again. The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
