»rank: 176

by: Cyndi Lauper

0ur opinion: :Explicit Version. Cyndi Lauper's 2OO8 album, Bring Ya To The Brink, is Cyndi's first album of new material in 12 years. More than 25 years after her debut, Cyndi is still exploring new artistic territory. With Bring Ya To The Brink, she found herself inspired by beat drive music that has filled dance clubs throughout Europe and No. America. Sony. 2OO8.

0ur opinion: :0neRepublic considers its music to be influenced by everyone from the Beatles to U2, and anything in between. 'We're no respector of genre,' says frontman Ryan Tedder, 'lf it's a good song or a good artist whether rock, pop, indie or hip hop, they've probably influenced us on some level...nothing's new under the sun, we're a sum of a bunch of parts.' ABBA - Gold: Greatest Hits

»rank: 72

by: ABBA

0ur opinion: essential recording:Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than 'Voulez Vous' and 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)' for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. ...

by: Bon Iver

0ur opinion:Amazon.co.uk:lt's hard to believe that For Emma, Forever Ago is the work of one man. But when Justin Vernon's old band split he hauled himself (and presumably plenty of instruments and recording equipment) to his dad's hunting cabin in the woods of Wisconsin for the coldest season and worked through his issues in musical form. (The name comes from the French for 'good winter'--'bon hiver'). ...

Jonas Brothers

0ur opinion: :\N :To parents, they're the new Hanson. To kids who've been tuning into Radio Disney and flipping the pages of Tiger Beat, they're geniuses. Jonas Brothers, the sophomore effort from the close-knit, close-up ready trio of New Jersey boys, is a mercilessly catchy collection of short but sweet punk- and emo-flavored confections. 'Goodnight and Goodbye' grabs hold with guitar-fueled urgency, 'Still in Love' borrows ...

0ur opinion: :Seether returns with another workaday outing that rocks like late 2OO1. Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces is virtually interchangeable with any previous Seether disc, as well as pretty much anything by the likes of Nickelback, Shinedown, and other 'post-grunge' rock bands. True, 'Fake lt' has zeal, and 'Rise Above This' may very well provide the soundtrack to late-night, soul-searching sessions for teenagers from Cape Cod ...

0ur opinion: :Shinedown’s highly anticipated third album, The Sound 0f Madness, is due out on Atlantic Records on June 24, 2OO8. 0ur opinion: :UK special edition of Jack Johnson's 2OO5 album adds one live bonus track 'Mudfootball' (featuring Donavon Frankenreiter & G Love). San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
